I’ve been thinking about the techniques that work for me when things are stressful and thought I’d share in case they help you.
Zoom Out: It helps me to take a step back to look at my career from a broader view. Today is just one day and one part of a larger story. In my experience, times of change have produced a lot of growth. It helps to remember that.
Zoom In: To counteract feeling overwhelmed, I choose a very limited set of accomplishments (1 to 3) per day to narrow in on and aim to check those off. My to-do list is always too long, and while it might not be possible to get everything done, it helps my mental health immensely to get those “must-dos” closed out by the end of the day.
Zoom To the Present: When I just don’t know what to predict or expect, it helps to stay grounded in Now. If I pause to assess, I notice that today, I have what I need – my family, my home, my health, my job, my breath. Meditation can help with this.
Tomorrow is another day.
